Only Sobotka worse – confidence index: total crash for Lena Schilling

Date:

The allegations against Lena Schilling, candidate for the Green EU elections, are causing her poll numbers to plummet. In the current APA/OGM trust index, it plummeted an unprecedented 33 points to a trust value of minus 50, putting it in second place in the trust rankings.

Only Chairman of the National Council Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP) supports her. FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl also enjoys more confidence than Schilling. As OGM boss Wolfgang Bachmayer explained, the other EU top candidates have also lost in the politicians’ confidence index compared to the last survey at the end of February, but to a lesser extent.

Reinhold Lopatka (ÖVP) lost three points due to ‘trust’ and ‘no trust’ to now minus 15, Andreas Schieder (SPÖ) lost two points to also minus 15, Harald Vilimsky (FPÖ) lost five points to minus 40, and Helmut Brandstätter (NEOS) lost four points to minus ten. “The election campaign is not a sympathy contest,” Bachmayer said.

Here you can view the results in detail:

There were also losses for the Green leadership: federal spokesman Werner Kogler and club chairman Sigrid Maurer lost six and four points to -24 and -29 respectively. After Schilling, the second largest drop with minus ten points to minus 31 was caused by Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP). “Support for a 41-hour working week was consistently discussed by the SPÖ – even if they didn’t say so,” Bachmayer said.

Babler makes up for the February crash
The Schilling case obscures other, sometimes notable, changes in trust in politicians. SPÖ leader Andreas Babler has gained five points (now -23), compensating for his drop in February, when he was openly criticized by party leaders and top union members of his own party, as the OGM leader recalled.

There is positive news for some ÖVP politicians. Chancellor Karl Nehammer (+2 to -27), Sobotka (+6 to -55, but still last in the rankings), club president August Wöginger (+3 to -28) and Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg (+2 to – 8) were able to do this. Improve the trust you’ve built in small steps, even if you still have a trust deficit.

First place for Federal President Van der Bellen
At the top of the confidence pyramid are Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen (+1 to +23) and National Council President Doris Bures (SPÖ) (+2 to +10). Green Health Minister Johannes Rauch (-1 to +5) and ÖVP Labor Minister Martin Kocher (-3 to +3) are the only government members with positive confidence ratings.

For the APA/OGM confidence index, 1,341 online interviews were conducted between May 8 and 15 with Austrians aged 16 and older who were eligible to vote. The maximum fluctuation range is +/- 2.7 percent.
