In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, a member of the state parliament of the right-wing AfD (Alternative for Germany) was attacked and injured. The crime was preceded by an argument with a man who considers himself to be on the left spectrum. Ultimately, a glass ashtray landed on the politician’s head.
An unnamed politician suffered a head wound at a bar in Schwerin on Friday evening, police said. He was taken to a hospital. It is now clear: it concerns the AfD member of the state parliament, Martin Schmidt.
According to officials, the alleged perpetrator, a 52-year-old, noticed the AfD politician in a group of four and initially insulted him. An altercation then ensued, after which the alleged perpetrator threw the glass ashtray in the direction of the state parliamentarian.
The act was politically motivated
According to police, the suspect said at the scene that he acted out of political disgust. He placed himself in the political left-wing spectrum. The police have announced that they will launch an investigation into serious bodily harm and insults.
Recently there have been repeated attacks on politicians in Germany. At the beginning of this month, Social Democratic MEP Matthias Ecke was knocked down and seriously injured in Dresden. The alleged perpetrators are said to have previously attacked a 28-year-old who was hanging election posters for the Greens.
The number of attacks on politicians is increasing
Berlin’s SPD Economy Senator Franziska Giffey was slightly injured in a bag attack last week, and on Tuesday evening several local politicians and Green Party campaign workers were aggressively harassed in Dresden. Last week, the AfD reported an attack on a campaign stand in Stuttgart, for which an anti-fascist group claimed responsibility.
