Two thieves are said to have stolen more than ten thousand euros in a wave of thefts throughout Austria about a month ago by unnoticed searching the cash registers in small shops. Based on the time of the crime, the police have reconstructed the possible route from Burgenland through southern Austria to Tyrol and are now asking for information.
According to the Tyrolean State Police, the suspected perpetrators struck between April 8 and 12, starting in the south of Burgenland. There, in Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol, the previously unknown men are said to have committed a total of eleven thefts in small shops.
The scam was always the same: a perpetrator involved the company employee in a sales pitch, while his accomplice searched the cash register. The thieves were able to steal cash in the low five-figure euro range.
Approximate route can be traced
Due to the traceable travel route, police suspect that the perpetrators may have been in certain parts of the country at certain times and may have found shelter there:
- 8th-9th April: South Burgenland to St. Veit an der Glan
- 9th-11th April: Spittal an der Drau to Mittersill
- 11-12. April: St. Johann in Tirol to Wörgl
Information about identity and further actions
The alleged perpetrators are charged with serious commercial theft. On the orders of the Public Prosecution Service, the police have now published the police photos of the two unknown men and are asking witnesses for information: Employees of accommodation establishments may be able to remember the men or someone may be able to provide other information about them. There may be more victims who have not yet reported to the police.
