Because of unrequited love, Georg Essl went out into the world and started collecting all kinds of things to understand history – now the museum and the association in the Gailtal are celebrating and have many plans for the future.
The life of the founder is just as interesting, exciting and surprising as the GailtalMuseum: Georg Essl I, whose ancestors came from Saxony and came to the Gailtal because of their Protestant faith, came from an idyllic youth as a goatherd on the Reisskofel to the Imperial Army After the death of his brother he returned to the farm, only to later go abroad because of an unrequited childhood love. He also became acquainted with Egypt and Palestine with the Jewish traveling teacher Rabbi Weissmann. The young Gailtaler’s love for history grew, which would later develop into a passion for collecting.
