A woman was killed by her two XL Bully dogs in London. The incident took place at the owner’s home in Hornchurch, in the northeast of the British capital, police announced on Monday evening. She initially did not provide any further details.
The woman, aged between 50 and 60, died at the scene from her injuries. The animals, which were reportedly registered, have been seized.Since February, keeping XL Bullies in England has only been allowed under strict conditions.
The animals must be neutered and chipped, muzzled and kept on a leash in public. This was followed by a significant increase in dog attacks. There were a total of 16 deaths in 2023, according to the ONS statistics agency.
There have already been several incidents this year. Last week, a 49-year-old woman and her 30-year-old son were sentenced to prison after their XL Bully attacked and seriously injured an eight-year-old boy. In early February, shortly after the ban came into effect, a 68-year-old woman was fatally injured by a dog while visiting her grandson.
Mixed breed that goes back to the pit bull terrier style
According to the BBC, the so-called American XL Bully was created in the US in the late 1980s from a cross between the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier. The goal was an even more muscular dog.
Owners face long prison sentences if they are attacked
According to the group Bully Watch, the hybrid first appeared in Britain in 2014 or 2015. It is said that the number of animals has increased rapidly during the Covid-19 pandemic. Dog owners face a prison sentence of up to 14 years if their animals attack them.
