Russian physicist Anatoly Maslow was sentenced to 14 years in prison for espionage by a court in St. Petersburg on Tuesday. The 77-year-old must serve his sentence in a penal colony.
Maslow is one of a number of important scientists accused of treason in Russia in recent years. Maslow has protested his innocence. He worked in the field of hypersonic missiles.
Maslow can be seen in the process in this post:
Physicist worked on hypersonic rockets
The Kommersant newspaper reported that Maslow was accused of passing confidential information to German intelligence. The physicist, along with other scientists, had conducted research in areas important for the development of hypersonic missiles.
Such missiles are state-of-the-art weapons that can deliver their payload up to ten times the speed of sound, allowing them to penetrate air defense systems. Hypersonic missiles of the “Kinshal” type have already been used by the Russian armed forces in Ukraine, but were intercepted there by Ukrainian units.
