Russia is currently beginning the announced exercise of its nuclear forces directly on the border with Ukraine.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the exercise was a “response to provocative statements and threats made by certain Western representatives.” The “readiness” of “non-strategic nuclear weapons” will be tested to ensure the “territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Russian state.”
Lukashenko is also involved
Putin himself ordered exercises with soldiers near Ukraine in early May. His Belarusian dictator friend Alexander Lukashenko announced shortly afterwards that his country wanted to participate in the exercise.
The Russian Defense Ministry emphasized in a statement at the time that the exercises were intended to “increase the readiness of Russia’s non-strategic nuclear forces to conduct combat operations.”
