A hotel ship collided with a motorboat on Saturday evening. Two people were killed and one was injured in the accident. There is hardly any hope for the five missing; there is probably only one survivor. The captain was arrested, but the MS Heidelberg was allowed to continue its journey, it was said on Monday evening.
The Czech captain of the Swiss-flagged ship is suspected of failing to provide assistance, resulting in death. Authorities only became aware of the fatal accident, which took place in the darkness near Veröce, late on Saturday evening, when passers-by found an injured person and alerted police. The ship apparently continued as usual; it was only stopped in Komárom, about 90 kilometers upstream.
Survivor must help clear up the case
The search for responsibility for the accident continues, as does the search for the five missing people. However, according to the head of the Pest Province Rescue Service, László Balázs, hopes of finding survivors are dwindling. Police hope to clarify the matter by questioning the Italian passenger of the motorboat, who managed to escape to shore with serious injuries.
High speed collision
The marks on the hull of the hotel ship prove that the motorboat collided with the MS Heidelberg at high speed, emphasized Mihály Tóth, spokesperson for the Hungarian National Shipping Association (Mahosz). As the online portal “Ma.hu” quoted on Tuesday, it is a fact that the hotel ship traveled the indicated route.
According to the police, the occupants of the motorboat were returning from a festival in the Danube Bend. The two fatalities and five missing persons are believed to be between 18 and 40 years old. They all came from the city of Sülysáp in Pest province, the online portal “SzMo.hu” reported. Police have released photos of the five missing people.
