Just a few years after recovering from breast cancer, the wife of Syria’s leader, Asma al-Assad, was diagnosed with leukemia. The diagnosis was made after the appearance of symptoms and various tests and examinations, the presidential office said.
Asma al-Assad was medically examined after several signs and symptoms of the disease, it said on Tuesday. The 48-year-old is isolated and undergoes treatment that also requires her to keep her distance from other people.
Aggressive cancer
Acute myeloid leukemia, from which Asma al-Assad is said to have suffered, is an aggressive cancer of the bone marrow and blood. It was only in 2019 that Asma al-Assad declared that he had fully recovered from breast cancer.
Last year, she accompanied her husband on an official trip to the United Arab Emirates – her first known trip of this nature since 2011.
The mother of three and former investment banker was born in London in 1975 to Syrian parents. The media asked several times why she did not leave Syria because of the civil war that started in 2011 and her husband’s politics.
