Primary prison sentences have been imposed on activists of the last generation, including the movement’s best-known face, Anja Windl. The climate gluer showed in a cheeky Instagram video what she thought of the arrest warrant she received.
“I brought something for Lara,” Windl says into the camera, the official document in his hand. Lara is a donkey to whom the activist then feeds the document. ‘Yes, look, does the primary arrest taste good? It doesn’t taste like that, does it? But a little sh….! What should we do with it now?”, the activist comments on the chewing movements of the ungulate with the paper in its mouth (see below). The video is captioned: “I think eating primary arrest is legit.”
“Eaten donkey”
Windl wrote on her Instagram Story that the donkey made a “strong statement” about prison sentences for peaceful protesters. ‘I don’t think I can handle the first arrest. Donkeys eaten. You can’t do anything,” says the climate changer, who was already in custody in Vienna last year, defiantly into the camera.
Most of the young activist’s fans on Instagram are celebrating the feeding campaign, but some wonder whether a donkey will do well if it eats printed paper. “I hope animal welfare sees this,” writes one user.
Also officially filed a complaint
Feeding the warrant to a donkey probably won’t save Windl from arrest. However, formal complaints have already been filed against primary prison sentences.
The so-called main penalty is the most severe type of penalty in Austrian administrative criminal law. This involves a prison sentence instead of a fine. The minimum duration of this prison sentence is twelve hours; in the current case, the activists would have to be held in custody for several days.
