According to the US, Russia has sent a satellite into space that is probably a space weapon. The satellite likely can attack other satellites and is in low Earth orbit, Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder said Tuesday. The start took place on May 16. The Russian satellite is now in the same orbit as a U.S. government satellite, Ryder continued.
When asked if the Russian satellite posed a threat to the US satellite, Ryder said: “Well, it is a space defense weapon in the same orbit as a US government satellite. There have been similar Russian launches in 2019 and Seen in 2022.”
The UN detects Moscow’s manipulative tactics
US UN representative Robert Wood had previously made similar comments to Ryder. On Monday, a Russian resolution against an arms race in space failed in the UN Security Council. Of the fifteen countries in New York, seven voted in favor of the resolution and seven against; one of the votes against came from the US. In light of a United States resolution against nuclear weapons in space, which failed last month due to the Russian veto, Wood spoke about Moscow’s manipulative tactics.
Biden suspected ‘no nuclear threat’
In February, American reports of Russian nuclear ambitions in space caused a stir. The nuclear potential would have to target satellites and could therefore pose a threat to national and international security, it was said. The US government subsequently announced that Russia was developing military capabilities for use against satellites. US President Joe Biden said at the time that there was “no nuclear threat to the people of America or anywhere else in the world”. Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to the reports, saying he was against stationing nuclear weapons in space.
