Management tolerates action – pro-Palestinian activists occupy the university

Date:

Activists occupied rooms at Berlin’s Humboldt University (HU) on Wednesday in protest against Israel and in support of the Palestinians. They may continue their protest until Thursday evening and a discussion session will also take place.

The university board and the occupiers reached an agreement on the round of talks on Wednesday evening after a conversation that lasted more than two hours.

Demo on the street
The police have secured the university building, where about fifty activists have occupied several rooms since Wednesday afternoon. On the street in front of the door, another 250 to 300 young people demonstrated with loud slogans.

HU President Julia von Blumenthal told Welt that rooms at the Institute for Social Sciences could be occupied until Thursday at 6 p.m. “We expect that residents will then leave the building peacefully.”

Walls smeared
There are also clear agreements that no further damage to property should occur and that no other people should be allowed to access the building at night, Von Blumenthal said. The activists smeared walls. The courses will be given digitally on Thursday.

Criminal charges filed
A police spokeswoman said that individual measures were taken during the demonstration in front of the university building that limited freedom. She was initially unable to provide figures. The police ensured that forbidden slogans were shouted. “Appropriate criminal charges will then be brought.”

The conflict in the Middle East has now reached German universities. There have been repeated protests against Israel’s actions in the Gaza war and student actions to show solidarity with the Palestinians. An occupation at the Free University of Berlin was broken up by the police a few weeks ago.
