A physical attack took place on a politician in the German state of Saxony. An AfD member of the state parliament was beaten while shopping in a supermarket.
The attack took place at around 1:15 p.m. at the Rewe market on Unteren Kirchweg: “An initially unknown suspect hit him in the face and then went shopping,” a police spokeswoman told the newspaper “Bild”.
Initially there was talk of an attack on a “politically elected official”. Finally, the Saxon AfD posted on platform X that it was the state parliamentarian Mario Kumpf.
Attackers caught
Kumpf himself alerted officials after the attack. Shortly afterwards, a 53-year-old German was arrested. An assault charge was filed against him. It is not known why the man struck. The AfD Saxony wrote on X about a “political motive”.
Kumpf has been a member of the Saxony state parliament since 2019.
