In the shadow of the energy and also the climate crisis, the long-dead nuclear reactors in Europe are now celebrating a comeback. While “Bild” is drumming for the nuclear power plants, an expert exposes the arguments about the green jacket and cheap electricity.
Electricity costs rose by more than 200 percent within a year. Many families no longer know how to pay their bills.
Even Germany’s largest newspaper, the Bild, is calling for a return to nuclear energy. Our neighbors want to close the last nuclear power stations by the end of this year. Greenpeace expert Reinhard Uhrig explains why (more) nuclear is not the answer to global warming and more expensive electricity.
Fuel comes from crisis hotspots
On the one hand – according to Uhrig – there is complete dependence on fuel transports from global crisis hotspots such as Russia, Kazakhstan and Niger. Uhrig: “Like a nuclear junkie, nuclear power plants depend on the supply of material, without which in some countries more than half of the energy generation would be lost in one fell swoop.”
In addition, nuclear energy is two and a half times more expensive than wind energy, water and sun. “It’s like caviar to fight hunger in the world,” the expert debunks the arguments. Energy independence is only possible with domestic, safe and clean renewable energy sources.
