The US government wants to split up concert giant Live Nation. The accusation: Together with its subsidiary Ticketmaster, the company illegally increased concert ticket prices. Artists would also have suffered damage as a result.
The aim is to split up the company, which has hundreds of well-known artists under contract, owns concert halls itself and controls large parts of the concert ticket market through Ticketmaster. “It is time to dismantle Live Nation,” said US Attorney General Merrick Garland. The company stifles competition.
The company defends itself
The US Department of Justice, thirty states and the District of Columbia around the capital Washington filed a lawsuit in New York on Thursday against the concert promoter and subsidiary Ticketmaster.
Live Nation said it would prevail in court, calling the lawsuit a possible “short-lived PR coup for the Department of Justice.” The lawsuit will not resolve the issues fans face regarding ticket prices, service fees and access to shows.
Sometimes terrible prices
Ticketmaster had, among other things, launched a critically acclaimed tour by megastar Taylor Swift in 2022, with fans complaining about long wait times and excessive ticket prices.
