Waited for hours – 14 animal rights activists arrested in front of the ministry

Date:

Fourteen animal rights activists were arrested in front of the Ministry of Agriculture in Vienna on Thursday. According to their own statement, they stayed there for seven hours to speak with Minister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP). Your wish: an end to the fully slatted floor.

The twenty animal rights activists came to the Ministry of Agriculture on Thursday as a “delegation of pigs”, according to a press release from the VGT Association Against Animal Factories. When they were not received by Minister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP), they waited at the entrance and some of them chained themselves with bicycle locks around their necks.

Here you see a tweet from Martin Balluch.

VGT chairman Martin Balluch posted several photos of the action. “Even if the minister buries his head in the sand again, the problem will not disappear. A ban on completely slatted floors is necessary,” he wrote on Platform X. The interests of the animals must be taken into account, it was stated in a broadcast.

14 activists in police custody
According to their own statements, the VGT members held out for seven hours in front of the Ministry of Agriculture in Vienna. The police subsequently released the activists and arrested a total of fourteen of the twenty. They were taken into police custody.

A fully slatted floor is usually a concrete floor with cracks through which the feces and urine of the animals end up in the manure cellar below. No straw is used. According to Statistics Austria, approximately 70 percent of pigs in Austria are kept on fully slatted floors (as of 2020). For example, the law prescribes a certain width for the columns and a minimum distance between them.
