Since the introduction of voluntary basic service for women two years ago, soldiers’s share has risen from 4.3 to around six percent. As of December 31, 2024, 818 soldiers were employed by the federal army.

In the government program, the Triple Coalition is planning to further increase the proportion of women in the federal army. Recently, the president of the Austrian officers Society, Erich Cibulka, had spoken out with a view to personnel problems with the armed forces to think about a military service for women.
However, the proposal is currently not a majority. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) rejects a mandatory military service for women as long as no total equality is achieved.
