Mourning in France – lightning strikes football field: coach killed

One person was killed and at least three others injured when lightning struck a football field in northern France. Eyewitnesses described to the French media the panic that broke out after the fatal incident.

The accident took place on Thursday evening at the stadium of Courrières, a small town near Lens, as the newspaper “La Voix du Nord” reported, citing the police prefecture. The deceased is said to be a 33-year-old football coach who, despite intensive efforts, could not be resuscitated after suffering cardiac arrest.

Two seriously injured victims were taken to a clinic with pain in their upper bodies, while another suffered burns to his leg. There were a large number of rescue workers on site. According to information, 33 people directly witnessed the lightning strike.

They then described some chaotic scenes. “The ground was smoking. The footballers were running in all directions,” an eyewitness told La Voix du Nord. A weather service warning for severe weather was in force for several departments in France on Thursday.
