The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered Israel to halt the controversial offensive in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. The humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has continued to deteriorate, the court said on Friday. Things are now “catastrophic” in Rafah. There was initially no response from Israel.
South Africa has filed the application with the International Court of Justice. It is part of a broader lawsuit by the country accusing Israel of genocide.
“No power on earth” should stop Israel
Israel has rejected the accusations to the end. The government in Jerusalem had previously declared that “no power on earth” would prevent it from protecting its own citizens and taking action against the radical Islamist Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Decision not binding
Rulings of the World Court are binding. However, the UN judges do not have the power to force any state to implement this directive. But you can appeal to the UN Security Council to take action on this issue. All Member States of the Court are obliged to respect the decisions of the Security Council.
However, it seems at least doubtful that the US would relinquish its veto on a corresponding resolution on Israel’s withdrawal from Rafah.
