Late on Friday evening, two men in Faak am See in Carinthia heard cries for help from the adjacent swamp area and alerted the police. They found a pensioner who was completely weakened and severely hypothermic.
A 25-year-old from Villach and a man from Bleiburg of the same age were parking their car in the parking lot of a campsite in Faak am See on Friday around 8:30 PM when they heard a man shouting for help from a swampy area nearby.
“They saw a male lying in the swamp about three meters from the paved pasture,” an officer said.
Soaked and completely covered in mud
When they arrived on the scene, police found a helpless man lying on his side in mud or water, no longer able to extricate himself from his predicament. “He was soaked up to chest height and completely covered in mud,” police said. However, it was not possible to climb into the knee-deep swamp and so the pensioner was pulled out of the mud with the help of the lifeline that was in the company car.
“The 68-year-old man from Villach stated that he did not recognize the swampy area as such while walking and was lost in it. “He was so severely hypothermic and weak that he could no longer stand on his own two feet,” police said. The pensioner was admitted to the Villach LKH after initial medical treatment.
