Dead and missing – Russia throws slide bombs at a hardware store in Kharkov

Date:

Russia has again attacked a civilian target in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. Authorities said two slide bombs hit a hardware store where more than 200 people were staying. At least two civilians were killed and many were injured and missing.

“We know for sure that two people have died,” the city’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, said on the online service Telegram. At least 35 people were injured and a “large number” of people are still missing. According to the hardware store operator, there were approximately 200 people in the building at the time of the attack and 15 employees were unavailable.

Huge area on fire
Images on online networks showed a huge cloud of black smoke rising from the affected building (see video above). According to authorities, an area of 10,000 to 15,000 square meters was on fire.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Telegram that all emergency services have been deployed to help people and extinguish fires. Russia again attacked the city of Kharkiv “brazenly” and “in the middle of the day,” he added.

“Give us air defense”
After the attack, Zelensky again called on Ukraine’s Western allies to provide his country with more air defense systems. “If Ukraine had sufficient air defense systems and modern combat aircraft, such Russian attacks would be impossible,” the president said. “Every day we appeal to the world: give us air defense, save people.”

Kharkiv is the second largest city in Ukraine. It is located in the northeast of the country near the Russian border and is regularly attacked by Russia. Authorities said seven people were killed in Russian attacks on the city on Thursday.

Five injured in a village near the border
On May 10, the Russian army launched a ground offensive in the region. On Saturday, Russia also shelled the village of Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, a railway junction in the Kharkov region near the border, wounding five people, according to Ukrainian prosecutors. Two vehicles came under fire: a car with two occupants and an ambulance with a driver, a paramedic and a 64-year-old patient.
