NATO has called on its member states to allow Ukraine to use Western weapons against military targets in Russia. The time has come to lift some restrictions on the use of the weapons supplied, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.
NATO’s Parliamentary Assembly (PA) adopted a declaration on Monday during a spring meeting in the Bulgarian capital Sofia with the motto ‘Assist Ukraine to victory’.
As an example of a possible use of Western weapons, Stoltenberg mentioned the Ukrainian region of Kharkov, where the front line and the border with Russia more or less coincided. Ukraine will be weaker if we continue to provide it with only partial support, the chairman of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly (PA), Poland’s Michal Szczerba, warned.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umyerov called on his allies in a video message to use their air defense systems to close the airspace over western Ukraine. Umyerov reiterated that his country aims for full membership of NATO.
Zelensky wants the green light
The reason for reigniting the debate was the recent Russian attack on Kharkiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy subsequently demanded the right to use Western weapons against Russian territory. Since Thursday, more than twenty people have been killed by Russian bombings in Kharkiv, eastern Ukraine.
“We see every concentration point of Russian troops. We know all the areas where Russian missiles and fighter jets are being launched,” he said. It is a political decision to allow the destruction of these forces before attacking Ukraine. “A decision that has to be made.”
