Too little recognition? – The Kremlin wants to remove the Taliban from the terror list

Date:

According to the Russian government, the Islamic Taliban ruling Afghanistan should no longer be classified as a terrorist organization. A corresponding joint proposal from the foreign and justice ministries has been submitted to President Vladimir Putin in coordination with other ministries, senior diplomat Samir Kabulov said on Monday, according to state news agency Tass.

He said the Taliban have also come “significantly closer” to being recognized by Moscow as Afghanistan’s official government than when they seized power by force in 2021.

Acceptance of the Taliban, especially in neighboring countries
To date, no country in the world has officially recognized the Taliban government. For recognition, Western countries require, among other things, compliance with human and women’s rights in the country. Other states, especially neighboring countries, have spoken out in favor of a more pragmatic approach to dealing with the Islamists. Taliban ambassadors have started working in some countries, such as China, Russia, Pakistan and Iran.

Since the Islamists returned to power, Russia has established itself as one of the key players in the dialogue with the Taliban. This commitment contrasts with the cautious approach of, for example, the US. In the past, Moscow had also advocated the release of Afghan assets frozen by the US and its allies.

Despite being classified as terrorists, representatives of the Taliban leadership were invited to a conference in the Russian capital Moscow in 2019, which was also attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. It is likely that the Taliban will now be removed from the list; Lavrov and Putin themselves have hinted at this possibility in the past.
