A huge heat wave is currently sweeping Pakistan: authorities issued a heat warning on Monday due to extremely high temperatures of around 50 degrees Celsius.
This is especially true for pregnant women and the elderly; they are at particular risk, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Climate Change said on Monday.
The heat will last until the end of the month
“The intensity, frequency and duration of heat waves are increasing compared to previous years.” According to the weather service, 53 degrees Celsius was measured in the ancient city of Mohenjo Daro on the Indus River on Sunday. The heat wave is expected to last at least until the end of the month.
Last week, authorities in the South Asian country ordered schools to close for a number of days due to the extreme temperatures. The heat wave follows unusually heavy rainfall last month.
Extreme weather is becoming increasingly common in Pakistan
Extreme weather events such as floods and droughts are increasing in Pakistan. Experts blame climate change for this. In the summer of 2022, the country was hit by a serious flood disaster, inundating a third of Pakistan and killing 1,700 people.
