At least 27 people were killed in a devastating fire at an amusement park in western India this weekend. According to police information, at least four children were among the dead on Sunday.
During the investigation into the cause of the fire, two people – reportedly the owner and manager of the amusement park – were arrested. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his dismay over the accident in Rajkot in his home state of Gujarat. “My thoughts are with everyone who has lost loved ones,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The fire broke out on Saturday evening in the two-storey building, which allowed recreational activities such as bowling and trampolining. According to the fire brigade, there were more than 300 people in the center at the time.
Part of the hall collapsed
Many had difficulty leaving the burning building as a temporary space at the entrance collapsed, fire officials said. Due to flammable material, the fire spread quickly and part of the hall collapsed, it was said.
Survivors reported in Indian media that they kicked open doors and jumped out of windows to get outside. “We tried to escape through a back door but it didn’t work,” one survivor reported in The Indian Express Newspaper. “I saw a beam of light from outside, kicked down the sheet metal and the five of us jumped from the first floor.”
Bodies burned beyond recognition
A police spokesman confirmed the deaths of 27 people. The four children who died were under the age of twelve, the spokesperson said. The bodies were burned beyond recognition, making their identification difficult. According to a statement from local authorities, police tried to identify the dead using DNA evidence from the fire scene.
