In Spain, climate activists have once again attracted attention with a spectacular action: members of the groups Extinction Rebellion and Scientist Rebellion spotted luxury yachts with black paint in the port of metropolitan Barcelona.
The climate activists then rolled out a yellow poster on Sunday with the inscription “El teu luxe la nostra sequera” (Your luxury is our drought). With the action they protested against subsidies for fossil fuels. According to activists, this amounts to 405 billion euros per year in the EU alone.
The action is part of the international campaign “Stop EU Fossil Fuel Subsidies”, supported by European environmental organizations that are calling for an end to fossil fuel subsidies and contacting governments and parties running for office in the upcoming European elections.
About twenty activists threw paint at several yachts in Barcelona’s Port Vell marina and unfurled banners with slogans such as “Fossil subsidies finance extinction” or “Fossil fuels + luxury tourism = drought and climate crisis”.
