State order – Greece saves: Cooling below 26 degrees is prohibited

Date:

According to a government order, authorities in Greece are only allowed to cool their rooms to 26 degrees Celsius for reasons of energy conservation. Greek Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas announced on state radio on Thursday that the thermostats of air conditioning systems should no longer be lowered with immediate effect. The use of street lighting must also be reduced to what is absolutely necessary.

The government in Athens has set itself the goal of saving at least ten percent in the coming months on the energy costs of the public sector compared to the previous year.

Governments and municipalities that fail to meet this target will have to pay for the excess energy themselves from other parts of their household. These measures are absolutely necessary because of the energy crisis. “We have annual costs for the state’s air conditioning and street lighting of about 800 million euros,” said the Greek energy minister.

Exchange of old devices
The expanded energy-saving program is not just limited to the state sector: according to the energy minister, citizens will be able to replace their old air conditioners and refrigerators with new energy-saving devices in the coming months with a program funded by the state and the EU. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Finance says that the application must be easy online.
