It was Friday evening, just before the main tent of the big “Augustwiesn” opened, when the flood broke out over Hollabrunn. After the shock during the night, the clean-up work followed on Saturday – the focus was on the festival grounds. Volunteers restored the situation in such a way that the party could continue on Saturday evening.
It was an inferno like never before seen in the entire Weinviertel: the exact event is still being reported. But – what motivates people to get this project going again?
Even though you hear about a rollercoaster of emotions so soon after the event, event manager Alexander Rausch is convinced: right now! Because so many volunteers have taken part in ‘their’ most important event of the year, all eight members of the organizing team of ‘Hollabrunner Volksfestverein’ are convinced that this must not go wrong.
The opening of the 70th edition of the traditional festival alone (with breaks in between) was a festive event with Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP). “We have our most traditional event again,” many people said happily.
The stop button would be the wrong response
“There were no injuries and a lot of luck in the game” is for the club boss the main reason to have thought about continuing at all. On the other hand, although they themselves were affected by damage, many people thought it was a good idea not to press the stop button now.
“The dedication of the volunteers was incredible – from repairing damage to private homes to public facilities. On Saturday afternoon, the large tennis hall was already sparkling clean, as the “Krone” respectfully noted during the on-site inspection. Why would you go home sad now?
The area was built up, also for charity
Other logical reasons: Hollabrunn continues to assert itself as an eventful city. In addition, the charity aspect was also crucial: Lions and Rotarians moved back into their stands, the supplier companies did not receive any cancellations, the hotel rooms are still occupied – and much more, says Wurm: “Despite all the shocking moments and efforts: the Hollabrunners have shown that together we can achieve a lot, even under the most difficult circumstances!”
Details about the storm itself, why things were still going well and why state leader Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) declared a disaster area will follow.
