The Israeli security adviser assumes that the war in the Middle East will last at least until the end of the year. This is necessary to destroy the rule of Islamist Hamas and its military capabilities, he said on Wednesday.
The Israeli military has defined 2024 as a “year of fighting.” “We need endurance and perseverance,” said safety advisor Tzachi Hanegbi. The armed forces are said to already control 75 percent of the so-called Philadelphia corridor. This is a border strip between Israel and Egypt of approximately 14 kilometers long.
Arms smuggling in the border area
Regarding the border area between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, the security adviser noted that it had become a “smuggler’s paradise” over the past seventeen years. Together with the Egyptian government, we must ensure that arms smuggling will no longer take place there in the future. A total of 1,500 tunnels in the border area were reportedly destroyed in 2013.
Both governments signed a peace treaty in 1979 and established the corridor as a buffer zone. While Israel accuses Egypt of enabling or allowing arms smuggling, Egypt warns of an “occupation” of Israel. That would be a breach of contract. However, Hanegbi assumes that the Israeli army will gain control of the entire corridor in the future, as there are no other ‘volunteers’ for the security checkpoint. The fighting in Rafah has come close to the Egyptian border in recent days (see video above).
No civilian rule by Israel
According to Hamas, more than 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza war so far. The Israeli security adviser hopes for a new Palestinian leadership after the end of the war. He emphasized on Wednesday that they do not want an Israeli civilian administration in the coastal strip.
