Spectacular accident on Thursday evening in the Tyrolean Zillertal: a local man (20) lost control of his car and literally raced towards the McDonald’s branch in Schlitters. The car then broke through the fence and came to a stop on the terrace of the fast food restaurant. The suspected driver of the accident – according to police he was drunk – and his companion fled on foot and were quickly caught.
The accident happened shortly before 1:30 am. The 20-year-old local resident drove his car on the B169 in the Schlitters industrial area on the exit in the direction of the McDonald’s branch there.
The brakes apparently didn’t work
“According to later information from the driver, he was traveling at approximately 80 to 90 km/h. He therefore tried to brake. However, the vehicle would not slow down. If I tried to brake again, the wheels would be locked,” the police reported.
The young man’s car then drove straight through the green belt, broke through an iron fence and eventually came to a stop on the terrace of the fast food shop.
It was a crazy idea to flee the scene of the accident
“Witnesses were then able to see both occupants remove the license plates from the vehicle and leave the scene of the accident,” investigators continued. Based on information from witnesses, the suspected driver and his companion (21) were identified and checked by a police patrol on the way to the accident scene.
“Contradictory Statements”
After “initially conflicting information,” the two men admitted that they were the occupants of the car involved in the accident. The duo were injured in the accident and were taken by ambulance to the hospital in Schwaz after receiving first aid.
Very drunk, no driver’s license
According to police, an alcohol test on the driver came back positive and showed that he was heavily intoxicated. “The 20-year-old does not currently have a valid driver’s license,” investigators said.
The accident vehicle was seized
The patio railing and inventory (tables, chairs, etc.) were severely damaged. No skid marks were found during the investigation into the accident. The car was seized on the orders of the Innsbruck public prosecutor.
