A priest who ‘proudly’ drives through the deanery in a new Audi Q8 causes unrest. In times of rising prices and growing poverty, believers receive harsh criticism. When asked about the accusations, the diocese is reserved.
Corpus Christi with no less than 286 hp: the luxurious Audi Q8 body is in the price lists of car dealers for 74,000 to 120,000 euros, depending on the equipment. Behind the wheel of such a vehicle sits a priest of the Franciscan Order, who travels frequently to places in the Croatian deanery in Burgenland. With his new ‘luxury sleigh’ the priest rang the bells among thoughtful believers.
Follow suit
Humility is required in the parishes. According to a report in Croatian news, the harsh criticism was widespread and led to heated debates. Reference is made, among other things, to Pope Francis, who at the beginning of his pontificate spoke out for a ‘poor church’ and who himself uses a small Fiat car for only 15,000 euros when he leaves the Vatican. “All clergy should follow suit,” skeptics note. In any case, the lifestyle of the affected priest is in stark contrast to the values that Pope Francis preaches and lives by.
Parishes indicate what is at stake
A lot of (exhaust) smoke for nothing – that is how most believers see the discussion about the priest’s ‘luxury sleigh’. The focus is on Corpus Christi, the contemporary Solemnity in the Catholic Church around the world. “The devotional celebration always takes center stage on the second Thursday after Pentecost, 60 days after Easter. In our hearts we consciously carry the consecrated bread, the so-called host, as a symbol of the presence of Christ,” it explains. Faith lives on, is the message.
“This is not a car from the Eisenstadt diocese”
When asked about the criticism of the father’s ‘luxury sleigh’, the Eisenstadt diocese around Bishop Ägidius Zsifkovits also maintained an elegant, reserved attitude. “This is not a diocese car,” was the short comment. The priest, who was responsible for purchasing a car, could not be reached for comment.
