“We call on Algeria to reverse this decision,” European Commission chief spokesman Eric Mamer said at the institution’s daily press conference. According to Mamer, this suspension is “extremely worrying”.

For her part, the spokeswoman for the Community’s Foreign Affairs, Nabila Massrali, recalled that Algeria is an “important partner of the European Union” in the Mediterranean region and “key to the stability of this region”

“We are evaluating the impact of this decision and are considering dialogue and diplomatic channels,” Massrali said, adding that Brussels is working with Spain to “find solutions to the current disagreements”.

Algeria’s President Abdelmayid Tebune yesterday announced the “immediate” suspension of the friendship treaty signed with Spain in retaliation for his “unjustified” support for Morocco’s plan for the autonomy of Western Sahara.
