Heavy rain led to flooding of the Rhine Valley motorway (A14) at the Dornbirn-Nord junction on Thursday afternoon.
On Thursday, locally heavy rain continued to fall in short periods and intermittently in Vorarlberg. At Dornbirn-Nord they fell so heavily that the drainage shafts on the highway were flooded or clogged due to the amount of water.
According to the Dornbirn highway police, the highway was never closed, but at times only one lane in the direction of Tyrol was usable. There was slow traffic and traffic jams that could be up to four kilometers long, according to traffic club ÖAMTC.
Emergency services tried to clear the shafts. The low-lying Dornbirn-Nord junction has been flooded several times in the past during exceptionally heavy rainfall or flooding, most recently in August 2022 and May 2019.
