In Mexico, an American patient suffering from monkey pox disobeyed official orders and escaped from a hospital in the city of Puerto Vallarta. Before he could be traced, the 48-year-old fled to his home country by plane.
Upon arrival at the hospital in Mexico, he had symptoms such as “cough, chills, muscle aches and pustular lesions on his face, neck and trunk,” Mexican authorities said. He was then tested for monkey pox and isolated before leaving the hospital on his own.
Escaped patient was also in Berlin in May
The US health authority CDC later informed Mexican authorities that the patient had returned to the US and confirmed the monkey pox finding. The man arrived in Puerto Vallarta on May 27 and attended, among other things, a party at a beach club. The authorities called on everyone at the party to be careful. The man was in Berlin from May 12 to May 16, in between in Dallas.
Monkeypox cases also in Austria
Monkeypox is a less dangerous cousin of smallpox, which has been eradicated for about 40 years. The disease begins with a high fever and progresses rapidly to crusting. Monkeypox is endemic to several countries in West and Central Africa, so it’s a constant and frequent occurrence there. Recently, numerous cases have occurred outside these countries, including in Austria.
