A pilot has been charged with more than 80 attempted murders in the US. The man is accused of trying to turn off the machine’s engines while he was off duty. According to the airline, the incident occurred during a flight from Everett, Washington state, to San Francisco, California.
The off-duty pilot “attempted unsuccessfully to disrupt the operation of the engines on Sunday.” Pilots occasionally travel in the cockpit, for example when they have to go to another airport. The incident involves a 44-year-old who works for an airline but was off duty at the time of the crime. Initially nothing was known about a possible motive.
Machine diverted
According to Alaska Airlines, the “security threat was credible.” However, the pilot and co-pilot quickly intervened. The engines never stopped, the flight was diverted to Portland, Oregon, and landed there. The off-duty pilot was arrested at the airport and charged with attempted murder, 83 counts of reckless endangerment and endangering an aircraft.
All passengers were able to be diverted to a later flight. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are currently investigating the incident.
