Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was seriously injured in an assassination attempt, has been released from hospital. At his own request, the politician is now being accommodated in his apartment in Bratislava.
The left-wing populist head of government was seriously wounded by a government opponent with several shots on May 15 as he stepped outside to greet waiting supporters after a government meeting in the small town of Handlova. The attacker, who was arrested immediately after the attack, is currently in custody.
During the police interrogation, the 71-year-old justified his crime with hatred of Fico and his government policies. This is evident from a document that the responsible court sent in anonymous form to the German news agency upon request.
Murderer spoke about ‘Judas attitude’
Accordingly, the attacker said he disagreed with the Fico-led government’s policies and its legal and media policies, as well as its “Judas attitude” towards the EU. Above all, he wants Slovakia’s military aid to Ukraine, which Fico has halted, to continue. That’s why he “decided to take action.” He did not want to kill Fico, but to make him ‘medically unfit to continue his work’.
In fact, it is currently impossible to predict if and when Fico will be able to resume its official duties. Two weeks after the crime, he was able to eat at least for the first time, government officials said Wednesday.
