Matthias Fornoff is best known to German television viewers as the presenter of the ZDF “Politbarometer”. Now, however, he is stumbling over allegations of harassment and forced to leave his management position at the station due to “complaints of misconduct.”
From Saturday, the 60-year-old will no longer serve as head of the editorial office for politics and current affairs, as the Second German Television (ZDF) in Mainz announced.
The broadcaster actually planned to fill the top editorial staff differently: ZDF journalist Shakuntala Banerjee was to take over the position on November 1, which was only announced in April, but now a former deputy head is temporarily taking over the position. Fornoff has been in charge of the editorial team since the summer of 2014.
Moderator gets “new task”
ZDF remains tight-lipped about the reasons for the unexpected castling. “He will take on a new role as editor-in-chief of ZDF in the future, without leadership responsibility,” Fornoff said.
In any case, the decision was preceded by ‘complaints about misconduct against colleagues. ZDF has investigated this and always sets high standards for its managers.”
Will Fornoff remain active in front of the camera?
The moderator admitted errors in the discussions and accepted ZDF’s decision. Matthias Fornoff is known to a wider television audience as the presenter of the ZDF “Politbarometer”, which presents survey results from the election research group. It was not clear from the broadcaster’s announcement whether he would be allowed to continue moderating the format or whether he would lose it.
