According to Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Ukraine’s desired membership in NATO is being put forward. The alliance is determined to shorten the country’s path to accession, Stoltenberg said on Friday.
On the sidelines of the meeting of the foreign ministers of the 32 NATO countries in Prague, Stoltenberg welcomed the US decision to relax restrictions on the use of US weapons against targets on Russian territory.
“Right to self-defense”
“Ukraine has the right to self-defense. And this also includes the right to attack legitimate military targets within Russia,” the Norwegian said in the Czech capital on Friday. This fact is all the more important because Russia has opened a new front and is attacking the Kharkov region from the north, he pointed out.
There the front line and the border line are more or less the same and Russia also attacks Ukraine with missiles and artillery stationed in Russia. “Of course, Ukraine must be able to strike back and defend itself,” Stoltenberg said. “This is part of the right to self-defense.”
The US allows Ukraine to use US weapons in Russia
The US government had previously confirmed that it had authorized Ukraine to use US weapons to a limited extent against targets on Russian territory. However, this only applies to counterattacks in Kharkov’s defense, a US government representative said. The Ukrainian army should be able to act against Russian forces “attacking them or preparing to attack them.” Apart from that, the use of US weapons on targets in Russia remains prohibited.
At the upcoming NATO summit in July in Washington, it will be decided, among other things, to transfer tasks in support of Ukraine, which were previously carried out by the US, to the alliance. The background to this is also the scenario of a possible return of Donald Trump to the American presidency.
