Unmistakable and – in bikini and swim trunks – particularly disturbing: four cameras confused visitors to the canteen of the Poysdorf swimming pond in Lower Austria. The tenant had also installed the “all-round eyes” outside. When the “Krone” reported guests’ complaints to the mayor, he did not hesitate: disassembly on the same day!
It’s hard to avoid surveillance cameras these days. But there are places where you don’t want to be in the sight of an electronic eye – one of them is the swimming pond in Poysdorf.
New canteen tenant: The community did not turn a blind eye
The popular recreation area was taken over by a new tenant this year. Whether in a bikini at the drinks counter or in swimming trunks in a cozy atmosphere at the regular table: the sunny disposition of the guests suddenly deteriorated when four cameras were suddenly installed. “These are also such that the viewing direction can be rotated,” said a “Krone” reader, expressing his dissatisfaction.
And indeed, a comparison with photos from last year showed that the striking white ‘all-round eyes’ in an area with swimmers do not exactly create a confidence-inspiring feeling.
Tenant: “Cameras only for night surveillance”
The new tenant emphasizes that he only turned on the cameras outside opening hours: “I also indicated this on signs. The predecessor had already suffered from vandalism and even theft by nocturnal visitors to the pond.”
The community had it checked – and immediately took action: dismantling!
When the mayor of Poysdorf was confronted with the matter by the “Krone”, he acted immediately: the cameras were dismantled the same day – the building is owned by the municipality. “As a bather, I wouldn’t want to do that either,” says David Jilli to “Krone”. There are also strict legal rules.
“We have also had the intervention legally investigated – and last but not least, as landowners we must ensure compliance.” However, a solution is being sought together with the tenant to enable the canteen to be monitored indoors with fixed cameras in the future.
