Two women and a man were swept away by the Natisone River in the northern Italian province of Udine on Friday. The search for them continued on Saturday. One of the missing persons is a 25-year-old Romanian who lives in Austria.
The other people are the 23-year-old Romanian girlfriend of the 25-year-old and a 20-year-old student from the Udine area. The three were not far from the river as they wanted to take photos when they were hit by the waters of the swollen river, rescue units said.
Help came too late
Witnesses saw the accident and called for help, but it came too late. Helicopters and rescue teams from the Udine Civil Defense took part in the search.
Heavy storms in the Friuli region
Heavy storms raged over the Friuli region on Friday due to low and Scirocco winds. There were floods in several cities, including the regional capital Trieste. In addition to heavy rain showers and thunderstorms, there were also local storms and hail and flash flooding was also observed.
In the Friulian seaside resort of Lignano Sabbiadoro, rainfall amounted to 60 millimeters per hour. The municipality of San Vito al Tagliamento also suffered from flooding.
