Amok drive in Berlin – Lots of flowers, candles and painful memories

Date:

The day after the death ride at Ku’damm in Berlin, traffic has returned to normal and all barriers at Breitscheidplatz were lifted on Thursday. However, markings on the pavement bear witness to the dramatic event in which a 29-year-old driver hit a group of students from Hesse on Wednesday and killed their teacher. For 60-year-old Berliner Egbert Schmidt, the scene of the accident evokes memories of December 2016.

People laid flowers and candles. Occasionally passers-by and tourists strolling along the bustling shopping street in Berlin-Charlottenburg take a closer look at the place.

Egbert Schmidt is one of them. The 60-year-old recalls December 2016 when a Muslim hitman drove into the Christmas market there. As a result of the long-term effects, a total of 13 people were killed and more than 70 were injured. According to Schmidt, he was at the Christmas market at the time. “It’s like déjà vu,” says the Berliner. “When I read the message and the Memorial Church was shown, I thought, no, again?”

Signs of Paranoid Schizophrenia
A 29-year-old German-Armenian raced on the sidewalks of Ku’damm and Tauentzienstrae near the Gedächtniskirche on Wednesday morning. A woman died and several people were injured, including tenth grade students from Hesse. The prosecutor’s office assumes that the eruption in Berlin was a deliberate act, but excludes a terrorist background.

There are previously signs of paranoid schizophrenia in the alleged perpetrator, a 29-year-old German-Armenian, spokesman for the Berlin prosecutor’s office, Sebastian Büchner, said Thursday. He is provisionally admitted to a psychiatric ward. According to the Berlin prosecutor, the offenses are legally classified as murder and attempted murder.
