After fighting for 45 minutes to survive in the cold water, he was about to give up when a hiker passed the bank of the Alm and became a guardian angel and lifesaver for a fisherman in Scharnstein (Upper Austria).
The 84-year-old German holidaymaker wanted to fish on Thursday afternoon around 4 p.m. in the medium-high Alm in the village of Mühldorf, municipality of Scharnstein. However, he fell and drifted about 100 meters downstream. The 84-year-old was finally able to hold on to the plants at the edge of the riverbed.
Flew to hospital with hypothermia
After about 45 minutes, an observant hiker noticed the exhausted man and notified emergency services. The Scharnstein fire brigade was able to rescue the severely hypothermic retiree to the coast, where he received first aid from the rescue team. He was then flown to the Salzkammergut clinic in Gmunden by emergency doctor helicopter “Martin 3”.
