After massive Russian attacks, the Ukrainian energy supplier Ukrenergo (Ukrenerho) has announced many power cuts for the coming week from next Monday. The bottlenecks will cause power outages throughout the day, especially in the morning and evening hours.
The shortage in the energy system will be greater than last week, the head of the energy supplier Volodomyr Kudrytskyj said on Ukrainian television on Sunday.
Reasons for Shutdowns varied
Following the massive Russian shelling in recent weeks, certain energy infrastructure objects have been damaged, including some hydroelectric and thermal power plants. These objects produced less energy than normal. Since Saturday, two reactors at nuclear power stations have also been repaired according to plan. Performance is therefore lower than normal.
Another factor is the fairly high temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius that are expected in Ukraine in the coming week. This means that consumption increases due to more intensive use of air conditioning. The country as a whole must expect a significant shortage of electricity. It is also not possible to meet demand by importing energy, although this has already doubled.
Power outages are intended to stabilize the network
The blackouts are intended to limit consumption and stabilize the electricity grid after Russian airstrikes recently paralyzed a significant part of Ukraine’s electricity production. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called on citizens to use as little electricity as possible.
After a new Russian missile attack last weekend, the damaged hydroelectric power station on a reservoir on the Dnipro near Zaporizhia is in “critical condition”, according to authorities. Specialists should investigate the safety of the associated dam, Zaporizhia’s military governor Ivan Fedorov said.
Electricity production from nuclear energy largely works. But energy imports from neighboring countries are not always enough to fill the gaps.
