Donetsk justice sentences two Britons and a Moroccan to death for participating in war

Date:

London has expressed concern about the verdicts, denouncing that the verdict was handed down after a “false” and “unlawful” trial.

The Supreme Court of the self-declared republic of Donetsk sentenced this Thursday to on death row two British citizens and a Moroccan accused of participate in the Ukrainian war on behalf of the Ukrainian side

Justice in Donetsk started the trial against Sean Piner, Aiden Aslin and Sadun Brahimcaptured by Russian troops in the context of the war and who on Wednesday acknowledged some of the crimes attributed to them.

Now, after “all the evidence” has been analyzed, the Supreme Court has proved the accused’s guilt and ruled that they “should be sentenced to death,” according to Russia’s TASS news agency.

The Donetsk Justice Department accuses Piner, Aslin and Brahim of committing crimes as a group, including the forced seizure of power, and accuses them of acting as mercenaries in the war in Ukraine.

Shortly after the start of the war, the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelensky, launched the Ukrainian Territorial Defense Legion, a detachment with which Kiev sought to expand its ranks with international volunteers.

According to the Russian authorities nearly 7,000 foreigners from more than 60 countries they have joined the Ukrainian armed forces to participate in the conflict since it began in late February, more than a hundred days ago.

Russia says just over 1,000 of these “foreign mercenaries” were captured, while about 400 were held during the siege of the Azovstal steel plant.

London response

Once the foreign fighters’ verdict was announced, the British Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, denounced that the verdict was handed down as part of a “false” trial without any guarantees.

Along the same lines, Downing Street has expressed concern at what has happened and reminded that prisoners of war should not be prosecuted for taking part in hostilities, British BBC radio television said.

“We will continue to work with the Ukrainian authorities to try to secure the release of every British national who has served in the Ukrainian armed forces and is being held as prisoners of war,” a government spokesman said.
