Election target clearly missed – India: bittersweet victory for long-term Prime Minister Modi

Date:

In the parliamentary elections in India, the party of former Prime Minister Narendra Modi lost its absolute majority after ten years. According to Wednesday’s final results, the BJP won 240 of the 543 seats. Naturally, it remains the strongest power and together with its partners it has 292 seats.

This is enough to form a government. Modi is likely to become only the second head of government in the history of the world’s most populous country to rule for three consecutive terms. Only the very first Prime Minister after independence from Great Britain, Jawaharlal Nehru, succeeded in this.

400 seats targeted – only 240 received
In the previous elections in 2019, the BJP alone won 303 seats – significantly more than the 272-seat majority needed to govern. Before these elections, Modi had set himself the goal of expanding this majority to more than 400 seats. This figure was clearly missed.

The opposition feels the morning air
Instead, the opposition camp led by the socially liberal Congress Party managed to make surprising gains. The Congress Party almost doubled from 52 to 99 seats and remains the second largest power. According to local media, their opposition alliance won 234 seats.

Six-week mega-elections
The elections in the world’s most populous democracy lasted more than six weeks. Nearly a billion people were eligible to vote – more than the populations of the European Union and the US combined. More than 8,000 candidates took part.
