Fire brigade needed – heavy rain: land under Ludersdorf-Wilfersdorf

Date:

On Tuesday evening, patchy heavy rain caused devastating scenes in the communities of Weiz and Voitsberg. Once again, around fifty fire brigades had to be deployed to combat the water volume. They had to pump out basements and even close highway entrances. The community of Ludersdorf-Wilfersdorf was particularly affected.

The storm operations simply never stop: On Tuesday evening, the Styrian fire brigades were called out again – especially in the municipality of Ludersdorf-Wilfersdorf. As of 5 p.m., all available troops and vehicles of the Ludersdorf fire brigade were in action, the firefighters announced on Facebook. Emergency services from Gleisdorf, Nitscha and Labuch were also on site.

The trigger for the severe flooding was again isolated, extremely heavy rainfall. Streams overflowed their banks, houses and apartments were flooded, streets became muddy and basements were flooded. The entrances and exits of the Gleisdorf West highway also had to be closed due to the heavy rain.

Other affected communities in the Weiz district were Labuch and Ungerdorf. The Voitsberg district also felt the storms. “The ground, which was already saturated by the rain of the past days, could no longer absorb water and therefore we had to undertake a total of nine missions in the city,” reports the Voitsberg fire brigade.

The broadcast continues: “The emergency services had to pump out several cellars on Baumkirchnerstrasse, Franz-Schöpfer-Gasse, Schubertgasse and Wielandgasse and protect the houses against water ingress. In the outskirts of Graz we again had to deal with a seepage basin that overflowed and flooded the Barbarasiedlung.” Due to the large amounts of rain, 50 fire brigades in Styria were busy with around 80 operations.
