Even last year, Japan could not stop the trend of declining birth rates. According to preliminary figures published by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday for 2023, a Japanese woman will statistically have only 1.2 children.
This value has fallen for the eighth year in a row and has also reached the lowest level since data collection began.
Asia’s second-largest economy has been one of the countries with the lowest birth rates in the world for years. At the same time, the country is aging faster than any other industrialized country. The island kingdom also recorded a natural population decline in 2023.
The government is offering incentives – so far without success
Japan’s parliament passed a law on Wednesday that should help halt the trend of declining birth rates, NHK said. The income limit for households receiving child benefit will therefore no longer apply in the future.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida had declared increasing the birth rate the most important task. But so far all the government’s attempts have failed.
