Provocative demonstration – reporter attacked during flag march in Jerusalem

Date:

Thousands of Israelis from the right-wing extremist camp celebrated the anniversary of the capture of the entire city with the “March of the Flags.” There was also violence. Several people were arrested. Other Israelis sent a sign of reconciliation in deliberate contrast to the demonstration.

Despite the Gaza war, tens of thousands of Israelis, mainly from the right-wing and right-wing extremist camps, marched through the Damascus Gate and the Arab part of Jerusalem’s Old City yesterday carrying almost as many Israeli flags. Their deliberately provocative flag march marked the 57th anniversary of the Israeli army’s capture of the Old City and eastern part of Jerusalem during the Six-Day War in 1967.

The police had stated that there would be zero tolerance for violence – from any side. More than 3,000 police and soldiers were deployed.

Still, there were violent clashes. The first victim was a Palestinian journalist who was attacked by a group of Israeli teenagers. Protesters also beat an Israeli reporter from the liberal newspaper Haaretz, who had been standing protectively in front of other colleagues. Police announced they had arrested five people suspected of attacking the journalists.

Shortly before, Israelis willing to reconcile had distributed huge bouquets of flowers to their fellow Arabs in the Old City of Jerusalem, bringing joy to many people.
