After Tuesday’s floods in Upper Austria, clean-up work has already started, so that the situation can quickly return to normal. River levels continued to fall throughout Wednesday.
“Thank God everyone escaped with a black eye,” says Petra Riffert, director of Donau Oberösterreich Tourismus, with relief. And we are already looking forward to it again. “The municipalities and their fire brigades started cleaning up as soon as the water receded. The sequencers always work perfectly after a flood,” says Riffert.
Level dropped by one meter
She is confident that most of the Danube cycle path will be able to be used tomorrow, Thursday. The entire path should be free again by the weekend at the latest. And the Danube should also open again to shipping in the coming days. Traffic across Austria was closed on Tuesday due to high water levels.
The ships had to take shelter in a shelter port, but the passengers were able to remain on the ships. On Wednesday afternoon, the Danube near Linz had a level of 607 centimeters – the highest level was 712.
652,000 euros for protection
To remain protected in the future, politicians are investing 652,000 euros in flood protection at the Ars Electronica Center. “In addition to raising the stop girders by another 1.40 meters, the floor slabs on this site will also be extra secured, windows will be made watertight and the pump system will be replaced,” explains councilor Dietmar Prammer.
