Two weeks after falling through the screen on the fourth floor, two-and-a-half-year-old Zara is playing again. “We thank God that she is still alive”, the parents say when they visit the “Krone”.
“Zara, don’t climb on the table!” – Two weeks after falling 13 meters onto concrete, Zara is already rushing through the apartment on the fourth floor of the house on Zechmeisterstrasse in Linz. Both arms in a cast, a bandage on her head – it will be a long time before the two-and-a-half-year-old girl is completely healthy, but Zara is still in a good mood. She is hardly slowed down by the associations. “We pushed out all the chairs and tables you can climb on out of the windows,” said Mama Nevruz S., 31), who is pregnant with twins, adding: “Thank God Zara is still alive. We thought that we had lost her.”
Two weeks ago, the “crown” was also with the family – the world still looked bleak. Zara had climbed out of bed, unnoticed by her sleeping parents, over the nightstand on the windowsill and, with the window open, had fallen 40 feet through the screen to the concrete basement entrance. The crack in the screen is still there.
“The girl first touched the ground with her arms. It has fractures, but that absorbed a lot of energy from a fall,” says Simon Kargl, a primary care provider at the KUK, where Zara was treated for ten days and had several operations. Even the doctor speaks of a miracle that his little patient is back on her feet In a few months, the titanium pins that stabilize her arms will be removed again, Zara will grow up without permanent damage.
Girl in intensive care for two weeks
Unfortunately, not all stories have a happy ending: three days before Zara’s accident, two children fell out of the window in Neuhofen an der Krems and Baumgartenberg. The refugee girl (1) from Baumgartenberg, who fell almost four meters into a tarmac driveway, has been in intensive care since then, the condition is still critical. The other child is also home again.
